You're not simply looking for a degree. You’re looking for a life in one of the most liveable, clean and genuinely welcoming countries on Earth. New Zealand is not Plan B It’s the first choice for a growing number of students from India, the Philippines, South Asia and beyond.

But what nobody will tell you at the education fair is that not every qualification will bring you an inch closer to permanent residency. Sometimes the only thing that separates a course that will lead to PR and one that won’t is one government document, the Green List, that is held by Immigration New Zealand (INZ).

While completing a course in New Zealand doesn’t guarantee you permanent residency, studying in a field that is high in demand will greatly improve your chances. The best way is to work towards a qualification that will provide a pathway to a Green List job with Immigration New Zealand.

And in 2026, New Zealand has opened that road more than at any time in its history. New visa categories, expanded eligibility rules and a brand new SMC framework launching in August 2026 means the window of opportunity is genuinely wide open right now.

This guide is completely up to date with every major 2026 change, official INZ announcements, Green List expansions, new visa rules and salary data so you’re making a decision with eyes wide open.

Why New Zealand in 2026?

The number of international students in the country increased by 24% to 73,535 students. New Zealand has 8 globally ranked universities as per QS Rankings 2025 and a reputation for industry-focused education. This is making it a growing choice for students across the globe.

Students succeed academically, and enjoy a safe environment, the chance to work after graduation, and a high quality of life. Compared to the UK, USA and Australia, New Zealand has affordable tuition fees and an inviting immigration pathway.

And the numbers bear it out. Bachelor’s graduates have a median salary of $52,900 ten years after completing their degree, while master’s graduates earn a median $76,000. 82% of graduates are in work within two years.

Major 2026 Updates

Before we get into the courses, you need to know what’s new this year. NZ immigration is not business as usual in 2027. Four major policy shifts have been or will soon be implemented.

Update 1 — New Median Wage (March 9, 2026)

From 9 March 2026 the immigration median wage rose to NZD $35.00 per hour based on June 2025 data. This impacts a number of AEWV related and family visa situations. Many Green List roles use this median wage as their minimum pay benchmark, so reaching salary thresholds is more important than ever. Positions with a pay rate of at least twice the median wage ($70.00/hr) may be exempt from some advertising requirements.

Update 2 – 47 New NOL Occupations (Mar 09, 2026)

From 9 March 2026, 47 more skill level 1 to 3 occupations on the National Occupation List (NOL) were recognized for AEWV applications. This directly widens the scope of careers for international graduates to move from a student visa to a work visa and ultimately to residency.

Update 3 – NEW SMC PATHWAYS (24 Aug 2026)

This is it. Immigration New Zealand has confirmed the Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) changes will be implemented from 24 August 2026. Two new options will be available starting 24 August to use with the current SMC settings.

Details of the changes are: Confirmation of key occupation lists, including the Trades and Technician pathway list and the red and amber lists, which determine eligibility for residence pathways; Simplified median wage settings that apply across all Skilled Migrant Category pathways; Clarified qualification requirements for claiming points; Extended English language test validity for some applicants; New recognised occupational registration for accountants; and Future ability to extend an Accredited Employer Work Visa to complete skilled work experience requirements.

The two new pathways in English:

  • Skilled Work Experience Pathway: For migrants working in a skilled job at ANZSCO skill level 1 to 3 with at least five years of relevant work experience, two of which were in New Zealand earning at least 1.1 times the SMC median wage.
  • Trades and Technician Pathway: For migrants working in specified trades and technician occupations at skill levels 1 to 3 with a relevant Level 4 or above qualification and at least four years post-qualification experience including 1.5 years in New Zealand.

From August 2026, New Zealand qualifications will be more strongly recognised in points. If you have a recognized occupational registration, your English test results are valid for 5 years.

Update 4 — New Post-Study Work Visa Changes (16 November 2026)

Here are two brand new post-study work rights changes coming in late 2026 every student needs to know about:

A short-term graduate work visa of 6 months will be introduced from November 16, 2026. It will be open to international graduates who are not eligible for a post-study work visa. Visa holders will have unrestricted work rights and be able to work for any employer. Graduates will have the opportunity to get a job and potentially move to an Accredited Employer Work Visa under the visa. Applicants must have a Level 5 to Level 7 qualification in New Zealand.

From 16 November 2026 for graduates who complete from this date, a Level 7 Graduate Diploma in New Zealand will now be eligible for a Post Study Work Visa if they hold a bachelor’s degree. This opens up some great new opportunities for graduates who might not have previously qualified to stay and work in New Zealand. Importantly, there is no time limit on when the bachelor’s degree was earned.

What it means in practice: You can now qualify for a post-study work visa if you already have a bachelor’s degree from your home country and complete a 1 year graduate diploma in New Zealand in a field such as nursing, IT or engineering. This is a game-changer for students looking for a shorter, cheaper study pathway into NZ's PR system.

Understanding the Green List: Your Real Ticket to PR

New Zealand Green List provides an accelerated pathway to residency for qualified overseas workers in special in-demand occupations. The New Zealand Green List 2026, launched in 2022, continues to attract skilled professionals in critical shortage areas. It replaced the former ‘Essential Skills in Demand’ lists for the country, merging them into one updated list of priority occupations.

If you are moving to New Zealand in 2026, it is important to be aware of the latest updates to Immigration New Zealand’s Green List, wage thresholds and Accredited Employer Work Visa rules. The Green List has been extended to include other trades and technical roles, increasing opportunities for skilled migrants to come to New Zealand.

Tier 1 – Straight to Residence Tier 1 occupations qualify for the Straight to Residence Visa – immediate residency applications. Examples of Tier 1 occupations are general practitioners, speech-language therapists, structural engineers and construction project managers.

Tier 2 – Work to Residence Jobs that give you the opportunity to apply for a resident visa after working in the job for two years. You must be employed full-time (at least 30 hours per week) with an INZ accredited employer.

To qualify for the Tier 1 or Tier 2 Green List visa options you need to: The role must be one of the Green List occupations listed by the government; You need to be 55 years old or younger when you apply for a residence visa; You must have a full-time position or a valid job offer from an approved employer that is approved by Immigration New Zealand to employ overseas workers.

After two years on your resident visa, you can apply for a permanent resident visa. This gives you complete travel flexibility, meaning you can enter and leave New Zealand at any time without restriction.

The 8 Best Courses to Study in New Zealand for PR in 2026

1. Healthcare & Nursing

Green List Status: Tier 1 - Straight to Residence

“Healthcare is the strongest PR pathway in New Zealand. Healthcare is one of the strongest routes to PR in New Zealand due to continued demand. Jobs in Nursing, Midwifery & Allied Health on the Green List offer great Post-Study Work Visa options of up to 3 years.

“Registered Nursing is Tier 1, which means as soon as you get a job with an INZ accredited employer you can apply for a resident visa straight away. Whatu Ora provides students with exposure to New Zealand’s public hospital system, a structured career progression and stronger eligibility for skilled visa pathways, particularly in regulated healthcare roles. Ryman Healthcare provides practical experience in aged care, a sector that is in high demand.

The 2026 update relevant here is the Graduate Diploma in Nursing or allied health – if you already have a bachelor’s from overseas, completing a 1-year Graduate Diploma in New Zealand from November 2026 may now make you eligible for the PSWV. This gives you a faster, cheaper entry point into healthcare PR.

Salary: Healthcare professionals (doctors, nurses) earn NZD $80,000–$200,000 per year.

Top Universities: AUT, Massey University, University of Otago, University of Waikato

Post-Study Work Visa: Up to 3 years (open work rights)

2. Engineering

Green List Status: Tier 1 (Structural) & Tier 2 (Civil, Mechanical, Electrical)

With New Zealand’s growing infrastructure, focus on renewable energy and construction sector, engineers are in demand. Tier 1 – immediate residency if you have a job offer. Structural engineers and construction project managers. Tier 2 includes civil, mechanical and electrical engineers.

Jobs in civil and structural engineering continue to be important to the economy because of continuing infrastructure development, demand for housing and earthquake-resilient rebuilding projects. Construction management and quantity surveying are also very much in demand. Major employers include international consulting firm Beca Group, based in New Zealand, and infrastructure and engineering services provider Downer Group.

Good news for Engineers - The SMC update for August 2026 is a positive one. From August 2026, New Zealand qualifications will be recognised with stronger points, so an engineering degree from a NZ university now carries more weight in your residence application than it did before.

Salary: The average salary for a Graduate Engineer is NZD $64,065 per year in New Zealand. Senior engineers comfortably exceed NZD $100,000–$130,000.

Top Universities: University of Auckland, University of Canterbury, Victoria University Wellington, Massey University

Post-Study Work Visa: Up to 3 years

3. Information Technology & AI

Green List Status: Tier 2 (Work to Residence)

New Zealand's tech sector is growing, and there is competition globally for IT professionals. The Green List targets certain high-level IT occupations, especially those involving advanced software development, cybersecurity, and telecommunications.

Competitive salaries for software development, data analytics, DevOps, and cloud engineering roles. Employers value practical experience, internships and portfolios over theoretical degrees.

The NOL will grow further in 2026 with a further 47 new occupations (effective March 9) including more tech-adjacent roles that will ease IT graduates to get an AEWV straight after graduation. The new Short-Term Graduate Work Visa from November 2026 also gives an extra 6-month buffer for IT graduates who did not qualify for a PSWV to find accredited employer work.

Salary: IT and software engineers earn NZD $85,000–$120,000 per year, with senior roles reaching NZD $150,000–$180,000.

Top Universities: University of Auckland, AUT, Victoria University (Cybersecurity), Unitec

Post-Study Work Visa: Up to 3 years

4. Construction & Skilled Trades

Green List Status: Tier 1 (QS / Construction Management) & Tier 2 (Licensed Trades)

This field has been one of the most significant upgrades on the Green List in the last 12 months. In 2025 the Green List was expanded to add a further 10 trades to the Work to Residence pathway. These trades include metal fabricator, Welder, Fitter, Panel Beater, Vehicle Painter and paving plant operator.

Then, new in 2026, the Trades and Technician SMC Pathway, which launches 24 August, creates a formal residence pathway for trades workers. With the new Trades and Technician Pathway launching in August 2026, the vocational courses are opening doors for students graduating with Level 4-5 Diplomas in trades which were previously harder to utilise for PR. This is seismic – a clear mapped pathway for students who previously felt locked out of PR because they chose a diploma over a degree.

A major highlight is the confirmation of the Trades and Technician residence pathway. This is particularly useful for construction, engineering and technical sector workers already contributing to New Zealand's labour market.

Salary: NZD $55,000–$110,000 per year depending on role and registration

Top Institutions: Unitec, Ara Institute of Canterbury, SIT Southland, NMIT

Post-Study Work Visa: 1–3 years depending on qualification level

5. Agriculture, Food Science & Environment

Green List Status: Tier 2 + Regional PR Support

New Zealand is a world leader in agriculture, dairy, food technology and in sustainability. If you care about climate, food security and sustainable farming, this is a smart and farsighted move.

Green List includes agricultural engineers, food technologists and environmental scientists. Regional areas of New Zealand are actively supporting and fast-tracking PR applications for these roles – so studying and working in Waikato, Taranaki or Canterbury in this field can get you through the system quicker than the same role in Auckland. PR regularly has demand for roles in agriculture and regional support.

With the new Skilled Work Experience SMC pathway starting in August 2026, experienced agri-science professionals who have been working in NZ for 2 years on 1.1x median wage have a direct route to residence – a strong incentive to go rural and stay there.

Salary: NZD $65,000–$150,000 depending on specialisation

Top Universities: Lincoln University, Massey University, University of Waikato

Post-Study Work Visa: Up to 3 years

6. Education & Teaching

Green List Status: Tier 1 (Primary) & Tier 2 (Secondary STEM)

Here's one that surprises people. Immigration New Zealand updates the Green List from time to time to meet the changing labour needs of the country. For example, recent primary school teachers have shifted from the Work to Residence pathway to the Straight to Residence pathway. That’s a significant upgrade – a registered primary teacher with a job offer from an accredited school can now apply for a resident visa immediately.

The 2026 angle here: English test results will be valid for 5 years for applicants who have recognised occupational registration. Teaching Council registration counts – if you have already done your English test, you will not have to do it for years after you graduate. One less barrier in an already well-structured PR pathway.

Salary: NZD $50,000–$90,000 per year

Top Universities: University of Waikato, Victoria University Wellington, AUT, Massey University

Post-Study Work Visa: Up to 3 years

7. Business, Management & MBA

Status: Skill Shortage List + 2026 Accountants Upgrade

In 2026 business received a certain upgrade that is worth knowing. The August 2026 SMC changes include the confirmation of a new recognised occupational registration for accountants. Accountants, who can carry out the work of a Qualified Statutory Accountant and who are members of CPA Australia, will be eligible under the SMC pathways.

This is important. PR track was less well defined for accountants. CPA Australia membership and NZ work experience gives accountants a formally recognised pathway to residency under the SMC from August 2026. If you are planning an accounting or finance focused MBA or bachelor's this changes your calculus considerably.

Salary: NZD $65,000–$130,000 per year

Top Universities: University of Auckland (AACSB-accredited), Victoria University Wellington, University of Otago, Massey

Post-Study Work Visa: Up to 3 years

8. Tourism & Hospitality

Status: SMC Points System (Longer Path)

Tourism is one of the biggest export industries NZ has. While not carrying the same weight as healthcare or engineering on the Green List, hospitality management graduates have found a PR route via the SMC points system, particularly in regional New Zealand where Māori tourism, adventure tourism and eco-tourism operators look for qualified managers.

The new Short-Term Graduate Work Visa, which commences in November 2026, is in fact especially useful for hospitality graduates. This visa is for international graduates who are not eligible for a Post Study Work Visa. Visa holders will have unrestricted work rights and be able to work for any employer. This provides a 6-month window for hospitality diploma graduates (who previously had no clear post-study work option) to find an accredited employer and move to an AEWV.

Salary: NZD $45,000–$75,000 per year

Top Institutions: SIT Southland (Zero Fees Scheme), AUT, Whitireia

Post-Study Work Visa: 1–3 years depending on level; Short-Term Graduate Work Visa (6 months) from November 2026 for those who don't qualify for PSWV

Your 2026 Step-by-Step Path to NZ PR

Step 1 — Choose a Green List-Aligned Course Select a qualification at minimum Level 7 in a field linked to Green List occupations. From November 2026, even a 1-year Graduate Diploma at Level 7 can qualify you for PSWV if you already hold a bachelor's degree from anywhere in the world.

Step 2 — Study Full-Time in New Zealand You must complete a degree Level 7 or above qualification that you studied full-time for at least 30 weeks in New Zealand. Work part-time within your visa conditions to build local experience.

Step 3 — Apply for the Post-Study Work Visa or Short-Term Graduate Work Visa

New Zealand's Post-Study Work Visa is an open work visa that enables international graduates to stay and work in the country for up to three years after completing a qualifying programme of study. Individuals who have a Master’s or Doctorate are automatically given the full three years. Apply within 3 months of student visa expiry. From November 16, 2026, the new Short-Term Graduate Work Visa will provide eligible international graduates who have completed their studies in New Zealand with up to six months of open work rights, if you are not eligible for the PSWV.

Step 4 — Secure a Job with an Accredited Employer The employer must be INZ-accredited. Wage thresholds apply to ensure jobs are genuinely skilled and fairly paid. As of March 2026, that general threshold is NZD $35.00 per hour. Check accreditation status before accepting any offer — this is the most overlooked step.

Step 5 — Tier 1: Apply Directly for Residence In a Tier 1 role (nursing, structural engineering, GP, speech therapy, primary teaching)? Apply for your Resident Visa immediately. Dependents, including spouses and children under 24, can be included in the same application.

Step 6 — Tier 2 / New SMC Pathways: 1.5–2 Years, Then Apply Under the August 2026 SMC reforms, the Skilled Work Experience pathway requires at least five years of directly relevant work experience including two years in New Zealand, while the Trades and Technician pathway requires at least 4 years of post-qualification directly relevant skilled work experience, including at least 1.5 years in New Zealand. Also note: from 2027, migrants who need up to 12 additional months of skilled work experience will be able to apply to extend their Accredited Employer Work Visa to complete the experience required to apply for residence.

What You'll Actually Earn in New Zealand

The median annual salary is approximately NZD $69,836 (Stats NZ, June 2025 data). Healthcare professionals, construction tradespeople, IT specialists (especially cybersecurity, AI, and data engineering), engineers, electricians, plumbers, teachers, and accountants are all in strong demand. These occupations often feature on New Zealand's Green List or skill shortage lists, which can fast-track residence.

7 Things Most Students Don't Know in 2026

1. The Graduate Diploma shortcut is new and powerful From 16 November 2026, graduates who complete a Level 7 Graduate Diploma in New Zealand may now qualify for a Post Study Work Visa, provided they also hold a Bachelor's Degree. Importantly, there is no time limit on when the bachelor's degree was completed. So your degree from five years ago in India, the Philippines, or anywhere else still counts. Complete a 1-year GD in NZ in a Green List field — and you're eligible for PSWV.

2. The new Short-Term Graduate Work Visa fills a critical gap The introduction of the Short-term Graduate Work Visa creates a new pathway for graduates who may not currently qualify for a Post Study Work Visa, while the expansion of eligibility for Graduate Diploma holders offers more opportunities for skilled graduates. No one falls off a cliff after graduation anymore.

3. Your employer must be accredited — always verify this Even if you're in a Tier 1 Green List role, your employer must be INZ-accredited for the residence pathway to apply. This is non-negotiable and often overlooked during job searching. Check it before accepting any offer.

4. Level matters as much as subject Students with a degree Level 7 or higher qualification (Bachelor's, Postgraduate Diploma, Master's, or PhD) can work for any employer, in any job. Students who have non-degree Level 7 or lower qualifications may also apply as long as they are employed in an occupation that relates to their course of study.

5. Regional NZ accelerates PR significantly Many shortage roles are concentrated outside Auckland. Healthcare, construction, agriculture, and teaching roles in Taranaki, Waikato, and Southland often come with faster processing, less competition, and stronger regional PR support. Regional NZ experience counts toward the SMC point system.

6. Accountants now have a formal registration route. Accountants who can carry out the work of a Qualified Statutory Accountant and hold CPA Australia membership will be eligible under the SMC pathways. If you're doing an accounting degree or MBA with a finance specialisation, targeting CPA Australia membership alongside your studies dramatically improves your PR timeline.

7. AEWV extensions are coming from 2027 A future ability to extend an Accredited Employer Work Visa to complete skilled work experience requirements is coming. This means if you're a few months short of qualifying for the SMC, you won't lose your status you can extend your work visa to complete the remaining experience. This is a safety net that didn't exist before.

New Zealand Isn't Just a Country. It's a Plan.

The students who end up with PR aren't the ones who simply got a degree. They're the ones who chose strategically from the start picked a Green List field, studied at Level 7 or above, worked with an accredited employer, and stayed informed as the policy evolved.

In 2026, New Zealand has done something rare: made an already accessible immigration system even more open. New visa types, expanded PSWV eligibility, a brand new Trades and Technician SMC pathway, stronger recognition for NZ qualifications, and formal routes for accountants. The message from the government is clear: they want skilled graduates to stay.
