Everything You Need to Know
About the OSCE
The Nursing Council of New Zealand (NCNZ) requires internationally qualified nurses to prove their competence before registration. Since 2023, this includes two assessments:
A. Theoretical Examination – online test covering Medication Safety and Nursing Knowledge.
B. OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) – a practical, hands-on assessment in New Zealand.
These ensure nurses can deliver safe, competent care while practicing in New Zealand.
A. Theoretical Examination
The exam is conducted at a Pearson Vue accredited center in your home country.
- Part A: Medication Safety
- Part B: Nursing Knowledge
After passing, candidates receive an invitation to attempt the OSCE within 18 months.
Note: Candidates have up to 3 attempts. Failing or exceeding the time limit requires re-application.
B. Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) – Hands-On Skills Test
- Location: Nurse Maude Simulation & Assessment Centre, Christchurch
- Duration: 3 hours
- Orientation: 2-day preparation course at University of Canterbury
