Many Indian nurses with a GNM or diploma ask the same question: can I use my training to move into a Bachelor of Nursing in New Zealand, and perhaps skip a year? The honest answer is that you can explore it, but you should not count on a shortcut. Admission and any credit for earlier study are decided by each education provider, one applicant at a time. This guide explains what we could confirm from official sources, what we could not, and how to approach the pathway sensibly. It is part of our wider study in New Zealand guide.
Understanding the Enrolled Nurse Role in New Zealand
The Nursing Council of New Zealand (NCNZ) regulates nursing in the country and sets the scopes of practice. According to NCNZ's education requirements, an Enrolled Nurse (EN) completes an 18-month Level 5 diploma of enrolled nursing, while a Registered Nurse (RN) completes a three-year Level 7 bachelor's degree in nursing. Moving from EN to RN is therefore a step from Level 5 to Level 7.
NCNZ's 2025 scopes describe the difference in responsibility. An Enrolled Nurse is an accountable practitioner who works with access to, and seeks when appropriate, guidance from a registered nurse. A Registered Nurse is responsible and accountable for directing and delegating to members of the healthcare team, and for supporting and guiding Enrolled Nurses. NCNZ also lists a third scope, Nurse Practitioner.
Enrolled Nurse vs Registered Nurse in New Zealand
- Qualification: EN: 18-month Level 5 diploma. RN: three-year Level 7 bachelor's degree (or a Level 8 graduate-entry master's).
- Responsibility: EN: seeks guidance from a registered nurse when appropriate. RN: directs and delegates care and guides Enrolled Nurses.
- Registration: Both are registered by NCNZ. RNs need an approved degree, a competence assessment and the state final exam, and NCNZ assesses each application individually.
- Progression: NCNZ does not describe a fixed EN-to-RN bridging route. Credit towards a degree is a decision for the education provider.
Why Consider a Bachelor of Nursing in New Zealand?
A bachelor's degree is the standard qualification for the Registered Nurse scope, so it gives you a higher academic qualification, broader clinical knowledge and a route towards applying for RN registration. It can also support professional development over a longer career. None of this is a promise: finishing the degree does not automatically give you registration, a work visa or residency, and we do not guarantee any of these.
Can Indian GNM Nurses Apply for a Bachelor of Nursing in New Zealand?
International students can apply to a Bachelor of Nursing at several New Zealand providers, but a GNM does not automatically guarantee admission or advanced standing. None of the NCNZ or provider pages we reviewed says that a GNM or an NZ Enrolled Nurse diploma earns credit or second-year entry, and NCNZ's pages do not mention India or GNM at all. NCNZ says overseas qualifications are individually assessed to decide equivalence, so we cannot say a GNM equals an EN or an RN.
What you can do is write to your chosen provider, attach your transcripts and registration details, and ask in writing whether any credit or recognition of prior learning (RPL) is possible. Expect each provider to answer differently.
Step by Step: Exploring the Pathway
- Step 1: Gather your nursing qualifications, transcripts, registration and experience letters.
- Step 2: Shortlist providers that accept international students for the Bachelor of Nursing.
- Step 3: Check academic entry requirements and intake dates, because some intakes close early.
- Step 4: Prepare English test results that meet the provider's requirement.
- Step 5: Apply for admission and ask in writing about credit or RPL.
- Step 6: Receive an offer of place and read its conditions carefully.
- Step 7: Prepare your funds and apply for the student visa.
- Step 8: Complete the degree, then learn the NCNZ registration requirements before you plan to practise as an RN.
Providers Offering a Bachelor of Nursing to International Students
The following providers show an international route on their own pages as of 4 November 2026. This is not a complete list, and fees and intakes change, so check the provider's page before you apply.
- University of Auckland: Bachelor of Nursing, 3 years, Grafton campus. IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no band below 6.0. 2027 tuition NZD 44,959. The Semester One 2027 international closing date (1 November 2026) has passed.
- Auckland University of Technology (AUT): Bachelor of Health Science (Nursing), 3 years, North Campus. IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with every band 6.5. AUT's fee figures differ between its pages, so confirm the current fee with AUT.
- Eastern Institute of Technology (EIT): Bachelor of Nursing, 3 years, Napier. IELTS Academic 6.5 with no band below 6.5. 2027 tuition NZD 30,000 including GST. The February 2027 intake is full; July 2027 applications are listed as 18 January to 7 February 2027.
- Wintec: Bachelor of Nursing, 3 years, Hamilton City Campus. Listed as available for international students. We could not confirm its English score or fee, so ask Wintec directly.
- Ara Institute of Canterbury: Bachelor of Nursing, 3 years, Christchurch and Timaru. IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with 6.5 in each skill. 2027 tuition NZD 31,547 plus a student levy of NZD 408.
- Otago Polytechnic: Bachelor of Nursing, Dunedin. Applications for 2027 closed on 2 October 2026. Check duration and fees with the provider.
The University of Otago itself does not offer an undergraduate Bachelor of Nursing. Its nursing programme is a two-year Master of Nursing Science for graduates of other disciplines. Other NCNZ-listed providers, such as Massey and Waikato, may also take international students, but we did not verify this. We do not assume every provider accepts international students into every intake.
Can GNM Nurses Get Direct Entry into the Second Year?
Second-year entry is not guaranteed. Providers can look at credit transfer, recognition of prior learning, your academic transcripts and your clinical experience, but each decision is individual. For example, AUT's general RPL page says non-formal learning may be shown through a portfolio, demonstration or challenge exam, and that formal learning must normally be within five years, but it does not mention nursing. Ara says it will translate previous study into credits and consider recent tertiary study individually. Treat these as general policies, not as promises for GNM holders.
English Language Requirements
Provider entry English and NCNZ registration English are two different requirements, so do not treat any one score as universal. The providers above ask for IELTS Academic 6.5 overall, with different minimum band scores. Separately, NCNZ's page for internationally qualified nurses asks for higher scores, and PTE is not accepted there. Whether those NCNZ scores apply to graduates of New Zealand programmes is not clear from NCNZ's pages, so ask NCNZ before you plan your registration. Our guide to OET vs IELTS for NCNZ registration explains the registration scores for overseas-qualified nurses.
Course Duration, Tuition Fees and Living Costs
Most Bachelor of Nursing programmes above run for three years. Annual international tuition on the pages we checked ranges from about NZD 30,000 to NZD 45,000, and those fees are paid on top of living costs. Study with New Zealand estimates living costs at NZD 20,000 to NZD 27,000 a year for Auckland and Wellington. Extra costs can include textbooks, a uniform and placement travel. EIT, for example, lists about NZD 2,400 for textbooks over three years and about NZD 200 for a uniform. See also our guide to the cost of studying in New Zealand.
Student Visa Requirements for Nursing Students
For the Fee Paying Student Visa you need an offer of place, evidence of tuition payment and NZD 20,000 a year in living funds for tertiary study of a year or more. Health and travel insurance is mandatory, and medical and police certificates may be needed depending on your stay. Student visa holders can work up to 25 hours a week during study, and full-time in scheduled holidays if the course is worth 120 credits. Read our guides to proof of funds and the student visa application steps.
After Graduation: Registering as a Registered Nurse
To register as a nurse after an NZ degree, NCNZ requires an approved qualification, a pass in a competence assessment by an approved provider, and a pass in the NCNZ state final examination, plus fitness to practise. The RN exam is multiple choice with a 70% overall pass mark, and the first sitting costs NZD 240. NCNZ considers each application individually, so a degree does not guarantee registration. This student route is different from the route for nurses already registered overseas, which is explained in our guide on how Indian nurses register in New Zealand. Completing a Bachelor of Nursing also does not grant a work visa or residency. For immigration questions, speak to a Licensed Immigration Adviser.
Common Challenges Indian Nurses Should Know
- Qualification equivalency: a GNM is not automatically treated as an EN or RN qualification.
- Credit limits: second-year entry is not guaranteed, so plan for the full three years.
- English: provider and NCNZ scores differ, and band minimums matter.
- Money: tuition plus at least NZD 20,000 a year in living funds is a major commitment.
- Intake timing: some 2027 closing dates have already passed.
- Registration: finishing the degree is one step, not a guarantee.
