A considered beginning

Find a Finnish degree that fits your ambitions

Choosing where to study starts with the skills you want to develop. Finland offers opportunities to explore technology, business, design and other disciplines through English-taught degrees. Whether you are planning your next step after Class 12 or looking for a master's programme, compare what you will learn with where you want your qualification to take you.

Finnish higher education includes research universities and universities of applied sciences, known as UAS. Universities emphasise academic enquiry, while UAS programmes focus on professional practice. Understanding this difference can help you choose a course that suits your interests and preferred way of learning.

Studying in Finland also means preparing for life in a new climate and community. Think about accommodation, everyday expenses and opportunities to learn Finnish or Swedish alongside your degree. Your choice of city matters as much as the course brochure.

Why Study in Finland?

A learning environment that encourages participation

01

A learning environment that encourages participation

Look for opportunities to contribute to discussions, work on group projects and explore problems independently. When comparing courses, check how teaching and assessment work in practice. Laboratory sessions, research assignments or projects with organisations may suit different learning goals.

Universities and Opportunities

Universities in Finland for International Students

Use Studyinfo to compare degree programmes and admission criteria. University bachelor's degrees typically take three years; UAS bachelor's degrees generally take 3.5–4.5 years. University master's programmes usually take two years. Check the programme's published duration and study format before calculating your total budget.

For bachelor's admission, you need a school qualification that provides higher education eligibility. Master's applicants need an appropriate bachelor's degree; UAS master's programmes also require at least two years of relevant work experience. Entrance examinations, interviews or other selection methods may apply.

English requirements differ. IELTS, TOEFL, PTE or other accepted evidence may be used, depending on the programme. Studying in Finland without IELTS is possible only where you meet an accepted alternative or exemption. An English-medium education does not automatically secure a waiver.

The joint application normally opens in January for autumn entry. A smaller selection opens in September for January starts; separate applications follow institution-specific schedules. Check the official admissions guidance and your chosen programme's dates.

Your Questions About Studying in Finland

FAQs

1. How much does it cost to study in Finland for Indian students?
plus or minus icon

Indian students usually pay tuition for English-taught bachelor's and master's programmes unless an exemption applies. The official cost guide gives an indicative annual range of €8,000–€20,000. Confirm your programme's current fee and refund terms. Living expenses are estimated at €900–€1,200 a month, or €10,800–€14,400 over 12 months. Combining these published ranges gives a planning estimate of €18,800–€34,400 a year before travel, insurance, permit charges and other additional costs. Your actual budget may differ. The stated residence-permit living-funds minimum is €800 a month (€9,600 a year), separate from tuition. This minimum is lower than the recommended living budget. Non-EU/EEA applicants generally also pay a €100 higher education application fee; check exemptions. Finland is not generally tuition-free for Indian students taking English-taught bachelor's or master's degrees. Finnish- or Swedish-taught degrees and doctoral programmes do not charge tuition, but admission, language requirements and living costs still apply. Students may work up to 30 hours weekly on average under the applicable permit conditions. Finding work can be difficult, so do not depend on part-time earnings to finance tuition or essential expenses. See the official funding advice.

2. What scholarships are available to study in Finland?
plus or minus icon

Finland scholarships for international students are usually awarded by individual universities. Awards may reduce tuition partly or fully, while accommodation and everyday expenses normally remain your responsibility. Check eligibility, application timing and renewal conditions for your chosen intake. Aalto University Excellence Scholarships offer a limited number of competitive full tuition waivers to eligible fee-paying applicants. Living costs are excluded, and some programmes may offer no awards. Metropolia scholarships include schemes linked to Finnish-language development. The rules depend on the student's circumstances and study cohort, so check the terms that apply to you. Searching for a “Finland government scholarship”? The Finnish National Agency for Education states that there is no government scholarship programme for bachelor's and master's studies of this kind. Use its scholarship facts and university scholarship guidance to evaluate offers. For a PhD in Finland, investigate doctoral positions and research funding separately.
