Build your knowledge in a country shaped by research and industry

Build your knowledge in a country shaped by research and industry

Germany offers routes into engineering, computing, business, sciences and many other subjects. For Indian students, the starting point is finding a programme that matches your qualifications, preferred teaching language and budget. Compare research universities with universities of applied sciences to understand the different learning experiences available.

You can study in Germany in English, particularly at postgraduate level, while German-taught programmes broaden your options. Explore the DAAD-backed Study Guide programme finder to compare courses and check their entry requirements. An English-language university website does not mean that every programme is taught in English.

Many public university programmes charge no tuition fees, but studying in Germany still requires a realistic financial plan. Semester contributions, accommodation, insurance and everyday expenses remain part of your budget, and some universities and programmes charge tuition.

Whether you are planning a bachelor’s degree, a master’s or research study, begin with a shortlist that fits your goals. Book a free consultation with Derrick Jones to discuss your academic background, preferred courses and application plans.

Why Study in Germany?

Find a City That Fits Your Routine

01

Find a City That Fits Your Routine

Your university experience will extend into the city around you. Compare accommodation, transport and campus locations before deciding where to apply. A large city and a smaller university town can offer very different daily routines. Look for a setting where your budget, interests and study commitments work together.

Universities and opportunities

Choose your course by its fit with your background and goals

Compare modules, subject prerequisites and teaching language before shortlisting universities. Research universities and technical universities emphasise academic investigation, while universities of applied sciences generally focus on practical study. Your choice should reflect how you want to learn and the qualification you need.

To study in Germany after 12th, first check your entrance qualification. The APS undergraduate update sets a 70% overall Class XII threshold for the stated Studienkolleg and one-year bachelor’s pathways from winter 2026–27. A Studienkolleg route includes preparatory study and an assessment; meeting eligibility requirements does not guarantee admission.

For a master’s in Germany, check degree recognition and subject requirements. Read the APS dMAT guidance: selected applicants with previous degrees in engineering, commerce, finance, economics, business or related listed fields need the test for summer 2027 onward, subject to exemptions. Check the affected-fields list against your exact degree.

If you want to study in Germany without IELTS, confirm which alternative language evidence your programme accepts. German-taught courses have their own language requirements. Check the course’s winter or summer intake and deadline, then follow its application route, either directly or through uni-assist where required.

Different Routes to Your Subject

01

Different Routes to Your Subject

Choose between research-focused study and programmes with a stronger applied emphasis. Compare the teaching methods, projects and facilities available on each course. If you are considering a PhD in Germany later, investigate the research areas and progression requirements that relate to your interests before committing to a programme.

English Study with German Language Skills

02

English Study with German Language Skills

An English-taught programme can provide an academic route while you develop your German. Learning the local language can help with daily life, workplace conversations and opportunities that require German communication. Check any language conditions for internships or practical training separately from the language used in lectures.

Opportunities After Graduation

03

Opportunities After Graduation

Eligible graduates of German higher education institutions can apply for a residence permit lasting up to 18 months to seek skilled employment. Review the official post-study guidance and its conditions. Finding a job and moving to a suitable work residence permit require further steps; neither is guaranteed by graduation.

Popular courses

Mechanical and Automotive Engineering

Mechanical and Automotive Engineering

Explore mechanical systems, production, mobility and automotive technologies. Compare the engineering fundamentals required at entry, laboratory facilities and design projects. For postgraduate study, look closely at subject-credit requirements: a related bachelor’s title alone may not establish that you have covered the modules a particular programme expects.

Computer Science and IT

Computer Science and IT

Consider computing, software engineering, information systems or cybersecurity. Review programming, mathematics and theoretical computing requirements alongside the practical work. Students comparing an MS in Germany should check the specialisation and module structure carefully, as programmes with similar names can have different technical expectations and research priorities.

Business Management and MBA

Business Management and MBA

Compare management, finance, international business and MBA routes. Check whether the course is designed for recent graduates or applicants with professional experience. For an MBA in Germany, review work-experience criteria, entrance tests and the complete fee schedule; an MBA should not be assumed to follow the tuition rules of other master’s programmes.

Data Science and Artificial Intelligence

Data Science and Artificial Intelligence

Explore programmes combining statistics, programming, machine learning and data analysis. Check the mathematics and computing credits required from your previous degree. Compare research projects, specialist electives and assessment methods to find a course that develops the analytical skills you want to use in your next role or further study.

Electrical and Renewable Energy Engineering

Electrical and Renewable Energy Engineering

Consider electrical systems, electronics, energy technologies and sustainable engineering. Compare the course’s technical focus, laboratory work and links between energy generation, control and efficiency. Review subject prerequisites carefully, especially when moving from one engineering specialisation into another at postgraduate level.

Life Sciences and Biotechnology

Life Sciences and Biotechnology

Explore biology, biochemistry, molecular sciences and biotechnology. Look at laboratory training, research groups and dissertation opportunities alongside the academic requirements. These routes differ from professional medical training; if your goal is clinical practice, check the relevant qualification, language and professional registration pathway separately.

Your Questions About Studying in Germany

FAQs

1. How much does it cost to study in Germany?
plus or minus icon

Many public institutions charge no tuition for bachelor’s and many master’s programmes, but “study in Germany for free” does not mean zero expenses. The official funding guide lists semester contributions of approximately €70–€430 and indicative living costs of €900–€1,200 a month. Higher-cost cities or private accommodation may require more. Tuition exceptions matter. Baden-Württemberg generally charges non-EU students €1,500 per semester, subject to exemptions. Private institutions and certain programmes charge fees. TUM’s fee guidance lists usual charges of €2,000 or €3,000 per semester for fee-paying bachelor’s students and €4,000 or €6,000 for master’s students, plus semester fees. For 2026, official student visa guidance specifies at least €11,904 when using a blocked account as financial evidence. This is money reserved for living expenses, not a tuition charge. Budget separately for applicable tuition, deposits, travel and initial expenses, and check the current requirement before applying.

2. Are scholarships available to study in Germany?
plus or minus icon

Yes. Scholarships in Germany vary by degree level, subject, nationality and applicant profile. Begin with DAAD India’s funding overview, then read the individual call for eligibility, benefits and deadlines. A university offer does not automatically include funding. For postgraduate applicants, DAAD’s Development-Related Postgraduate Courses programme, known as EPOS, supports selected courses and generally requires at least two years of relevant professional experience. The Helmut-Schmidt Programme focuses on selected public policy and good governance master’s courses. These are specific funding routes, not scholarships for every degree at every institution. Also check university awards and other schemes listed in the DAAD scholarship database. Compare what each award actually covers: living support, insurance, travel or tuition. Undergraduate applicants should distinguish short-term or summer-course support from full-degree funding. Keep an affordable study plan in place until your award is confirmed in writing.
