A considered beginning

Choose a Dutch degree that supports your next step

From technology and business to environmental science and social research, the Netherlands offers a broad choice of English-taught study options. For Indian students, the starting point is finding a programme that builds on your qualifications and develops the knowledge you want to use in your career.

Dutch higher education includes research universities and universities of applied sciences. Research universities focus on academic study and enquiry, while applied sciences institutions emphasise professional learning. Compare both routes before deciding which environment suits you.

Whether you are exploring undergraduate study after Class 12 or a master's in the Netherlands, plan the practical details alongside your application. Tuition, accommodation, language requirements and deadlines can differ significantly between institutions.

Develop ideas through discussion and projects

Look for a course that gives you opportunities to question, investigate and apply what you learn. Compare seminars, group assignments, research projects and practical training. The balance will depend on the institution and degree, so explore the teaching approach as carefully as the course title.

Universities in the Netherlands for International Students

Start with the Dutch education guide and each institution's programme pages. Research university bachelor's degrees generally take three years; most applied sciences bachelor's degrees take four. Master's duration varies by discipline and study format, so check the published length before calculating your budget.

Universities assess whether your Indian qualifications meet their entry requirements. For undergraduate admission, check the accepted school credentials, subjects and grades. For master's admission, review the required degree level and subject preparation; some applicants may need a preparatory route. There is no single percentage requirement for every Dutch university.

English-taught programmes require evidence of English proficiency. Accepted tests and scores vary. Studying in the Netherlands without IELTS is possible where the programme accepts another test or explicitly grants an exemption; do not assume an English-medium certificate alone is sufficient. Read the official admission guidance.

Many applications begin through Studielink, followed by the institution's own requirements. Numerus fixus programmes with limited places normally have a 15 January deadline. Other deadlines vary, including earlier dates for international applicants and scholarships. Confirm your programme's intake and application schedule using the official application guide.

Your Questions About Studying in the Netherlands

FAQs

1. How much does it cost to study in the Netherlands for Indian students?
plus or minus icon

Most Indian applicants pay non-EU/EEA tuition fees. The official tuition guide gives indicative annual ranges of €9,000–€20,000 for bachelor's programmes and €12,000–€30,000 for master's programmes. Confirm your exact fee category and programme fee; some courses cost more. The official living-cost guide estimates €1,000–€1,500 a month. This equals €12,000–€18,000 over 12 months, with housing costs depending heavily on location and availability. Include travel, insurance, immigration fees, deposits and study materials in your individual budget without double-counting expenses already included. For 2026, the IND study-funds requirement is €1,130.77 per month for higher education, excluding tuition. Follow the proof-of-funds guidance for the required 12-month period. This immigration requirement is not a guarantee that the amount will cover your actual costs; use the rate applicable when you apply. Under the student permit, employed work requires an employer-held TWV work permit. You must choose between up to 16 hours a week or full-time work in June, July and August. Check the IND student work rules, and plan your finances without relying on finding a part-time job.

2. What scholarships are available in the Netherlands for Indian students?
plus or minus icon

Scholarships may be available through participating universities and funding schemes. Eligibility, award coverage and deadlines vary, so investigate funding while choosing your programme. The NL Scholarship, previously called the Holland Scholarship, offers €5,000 in the first year to selected eligible non-EEA students entering participating bachelor's or master's programmes. It is not a full-tuition scholarship. Check the participating institutions and conditions for your intake. The Maastricht University NL-High Potential Scholarship is a competitive award for selected eligible non-EU/EEA applicants to participating master's programmes. Its package includes tuition support and a living allowance, subject to the published terms. Programme admission and scholarship applications have separate requirements and deadlines. Also check your shortlisted university's funding pages. Some awards cover only part of tuition, while others have restrictions on courses, nationality or previous study. Keep a funding plan for any costs the scholarship does not cover.
