Programme Overview

This programme prepares you to nurture and care for women through pregnancy, childbirth, and the first six weeks following birth. You will gain the skills to work autonomously and take full responsibility for the wellbeing of mothers and babies.

The course uses a blended delivery model. Theory is taught via intensive block courses in Hamilton, while practical experience is gained through clinical placements in regional hubs. Upon completion, graduates must pass the National Midwifery Examination to become a Registered Midwife.


What You'll Study

The four-year programme moves from intensive theory to predominantly practical clinical experience.

Year One (Level 5): Foundations

  • HSMW511 & HSMW521: Introduction to and Developing Midwifery Knowledge and Practice.
  • HSMW514 & HSMW524: Human Anatomy and Physiology A and B.
  • HSMW523: Te Whare Kōhanga – Bicultural Frameworks for Midwifery.
  • HSMW531: Mother and Baby Dyad (30 credits).

Year Two & Three (Level 6): Intermediate Practice

  • HSMW633: Pregnancy and Birth B.
  • HSMW641: Continuity in Midwifery Practice (30 credits).
  • HSMW651 & HSMW652: Complications and Conditions in Midwifery Practice.
  • HSMW661: Pharmacology for Midwifery.

Year Four (Level 7): Advanced Integration

  • HSMW771: Integrating Midwifery Practice (60 credits).
  • HSMW781: Rangahau and Research Methods for Midwifery.

HSMW782: Transition to Practice (30 credits).

Entry Requirements

  • Academic: University Entrance with specific NCEA Level 3 science and English requirements, or a Level 4 Health foundation programme with a 65% average.
