Programme Overview
This programme is the essential pathway for mariners aiming to become a certified Officer of the Watch (OOW) on merchant vessels, large fishing trawlers, or factory ships. It meets the strict international standards of the STCW (Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping) convention.
Training is conducted at IMINZ, which features world-class facilities, including advanced Kongsberg bridge simulators and a new purpose-built powerboat, Kina. Students transition from crew roles to bridge management, learning to navigate through storms, dock ships, and prevent fatigue in a controlled, high-fidelity environment.
What You'll Study
The diploma provides the "shore-based" theoretical and technical training required to pass Maritime New Zealand (MNZ) examinations.
Core Nautical Modules:
- Navigation & Voyage Planning: Terrestrial and coastal navigation, including tide calculations and passage planning.
- Electronic Navigation: Proficiency in Radar, ARPA, and ECDIS (Electronic Chart Display and Information System).
- Ship Construction & Stability: Understanding hull integrity and buoyancy.
- Watchkeeping & Cargo Operations: Rule of the Road (COLREGs) and the safe handling/stowage of various cargo types.
STCW Ancillary Courses (Integrated or Required):
- STCW Advanced Fire Fighting (FFT511)
- STCW Medical First Aid (FAC511)
- STCW Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats (SCC511)
Why Choose This Programme?
- IMINZ Heritage: Training seafarers since 1976 with a reputation for producing highly skilled navigators.
- Advanced Simulation: Utilize Kongsberg marine simulation systems to practice emergency scenarios like "abandon ship" or heavy weather navigation.
- New Equipment: Training in 2026 includes the use of NMIT’s new custom-built 6.3-metre powerboat for practical on-water drills.
- Global Port Access: Nelson is home to the largest fishing port in Australasia, providing direct industry context.
