Study Pathways at Otago

The University of Otago offers more than 200 undergraduate and postgraduate programmes with flexible course options that allow students to tailor their studies. Interdisciplinary degrees such as the Bachelor of Arts and Science, Bachelor of Arts and Commerce, and Bachelor of Commerce and Science provide hundreds of possible major combinations. Postgraduate study is available across four divisions: Health Sciences, Sciences, Humanities, and the Otago School of Business.

Foundation Studies Certificate

This 26-week programme helps students meet the entry requirements for degree study through four academic streams: business/commerce, health sciences, arts/humanities, and sciences. Successful completion provides guaranteed entry to first-year degree programmes and is recognised by all universities in New Zealand.

Diploma Pathways

The Diploma in Arts, Commerce, and Science (Level 5) supports international students who narrowly miss direct undergraduate entry requirements. After completing one year, students can progress directly into the second year of the corresponding bachelor’s degree.

English Language Programmes

Otago’s English Language Centre offers five levels of general English, from beginner to advanced, designed to strengthen language proficiency for academic study.

Flexible Study Options

Students can also access Summer School (January–February), distance learning, online programmes, and study abroad opportunities, offering flexible ways to continue their education.

Admission Requirements

Academic Qualifications

Applicants must meet the University of Otago’s entry standards. Undergraduate applicants should hold a recognised university entrance qualification or an equivalent international credential (such as IB, CIE, NUCK, or IFY). Postgraduate programmes generally require a relevant bachelor’s degree, and some may also ask for work experience or professional registration. Specific requirements vary by programme and country.

Diploma in Commerce, Arts, or Science

IELTS 5.5 overall (no band below 5) or equivalent, plus completion of the final year of high school with at least a B- average in three relevant subjects.

Foundation Studies Certificate

IELTS 5.5 overall (no band below 5) or equivalent, and completion of Year 11 or an equivalent level in the K-12 system.

Pathway - Te Huarahi Scholarship

For international students enrolling in the Foundation Studies Certificate.

Value: From NZD 5,000 toward tuition.

Value: NZD 10,000 off first-year tuition.

Otago Global Scholarships
