Master of Architecture

Programme Overview

The Master of Architecture (MArch) at the University of Auckland is a self-directed, research-based postgraduate degree. The programme allows students to specialize in either Architecture or Sustainable Design, conducting advanced academic inquiry under the guidance of academic supervisors from the School of Architecture and Planning. The study culminates in the submission of a 35,000–40,000 word research thesis or research portfolio.

Important Note: The MArch is an academic research degree and is not a professionally accredited qualification. It does not lead to professional registration as an architect in New Zealand (for professional registration, students must complete the Master of Architecture (Professional) [MArch(Prof)]).

Programme Pathways & Core Formats

The qualification is offered in both 120-point and 180-point structures depending on prior qualifications:

1. 120-Point Research Pathway (1 Year Full-Time): For applicants entering with a MArch(Prof) or PGDipArch. Completed either as a pure 120-point research thesis or a 90-point research portfolio plus 30 points of elective courses.
2. 180-Point Research Pathway (1.5 Years Full-Time): For applicants entering with a 3-year BAS degree. Comprises 60 points of compulsory/elective coursework and a 120-point research thesis.
3. Specialisations: Students select one of two specialized tracks: Architecture or Sustainable Design.

Entry Requirements

• Academic Minimums: Minimum GPA/GPE of 4.0 (B- average) in prior qualifying study.
• Registration Disclaimer: Does not meet NZRAB/NZIA educational requirements for architectural registration (see MArch(Prof) for professional practice).
• Research Proposal: Applicants must submit an approved research proposal detailing their proposed thesis project.
• Language Requirement: Academic IELTS 6.5 overall (no band < 6.0), PTE 58 (no communicative score < 50), or TOEFL iBT 90.
