Programme Overview
The Master of Education (MEd) provides a platform to deepen your structural understanding of educational systems, professional practices, and policy lines. Offering both taught and research frameworks, the qualification allows practitioners to investigate critical localized issues and position themselves as thought leaders who can drive positive changes across schools and diverse communities. The curriculum is highly flexible, supporting innovative, research-informed expertise that can be tailored directly to your specific work environment or sector.
Specialisation Pathways
Students have the flexibility to frame their studies around a declared specialization background:
- Early Childhood Education: Cultivates advanced expertise in psychology, institutional leadership, Child Development pedagogy, and contemporary perspectives on young learners.
- Inclusive Education: Designed for workplace professionals and learning support specialists (such as SENCOs) aiming to build capabilities in coordinating and managing inclusive school or center communities.
What You'll Study
The structural layout is determined by whether a student is admitted into the 120-point or 180-point track, focusing heavily on research methodology and execution:
120-Point Research Track:
- Prerequisite Foundational Knowledge: Students must have already completed an approved Research Methods framework (at least 30 points) during previous postgraduate study.
- Core Capstone Component: Completion of a comprehensive 120-point independent research Thesis.
180-Point Research Track:
- Research Methodology: Completion of an approved 30-point Research Methods module, such as Research Methodologies (EDUCSW 700) or Māori and Indigenous Research (EDUC 787).
- Core Capstone Component: Completion of an intensive 90-point independent supervised research Thesis.
Why Choose This Programme?
- Elite Global Ranking: Learn within a faculty whose educational offerings are rated in the top 2% internationally and recognized among the best in New Zealand.
- Flexible Delivery Modes: Balance professional working schedules easily by choosing between traditional on-campus study or a fully online learning delivery model.
- Transition Security: For the 180-point track, students who do not hit the mandatory 5.0 GPA line across their initial 60 points of taught papers can apply to reassign completed points toward a Postgraduate Diploma or Certificate in Education.
