Programme Overview
The Graduate Diploma in Teaching (Primary) allows degree holders to add a professional teaching qualification to their existing academic profile. This practical programme qualifies graduates to become provisionally certificated teachers in primary and intermediate schools across New Zealand and overseas, working with children aged 5 to 13 (Years 1 to 8).
Taught by primary education specialists, the curriculum focuses heavily on digital learning tool mastery, welcoming diversity, and building responsive classroom relationships. The diploma is underpinned by principles of fairness, social justice, and a commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
What You'll Study
The 150-point structure balances core pedagogical theory, curriculum familiarity, and basic proficiency in te reo Māori with intensive school-based training.
Core Academic Components:
- The New Zealand Curriculum: Deep structural breakdown of key learning subjects, including the arts, science, and sport.
- Te Ao Māori: Developing basic te reo Māori language skills and cultural practices.
- Compulsory Coursework Blocks: Includes essential courses such as EDUC 603, EDCURRIC 625, EDCURRIC 639, and EDPROFM 600.
Professional Experience (Practicum):
- Weekly Integration: Students work inside real school environments two days a week across both semesters.
- Block Practicums: Includes an additional 16 weeks of full-time block placements across two different school settings.
- Specialist Options: Opportunities exist to apply for a practicum placement within a dedicated specialist school.
