Programme Overview
The Master of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (MTESOL) is a taught postgraduate degree designed specifically for the professional development of language teachers. The curriculum enables educators to build a deep, research-informed understanding of the linguistic, psychological, and social challenges individuals encounter when learning a new language. Students learn to systematically apply advanced pedagogical frameworks, assessment models, and curriculum innovations directly into language learning workspaces.
Note: Completing the MTESOL is focused on professional enrichment and does not qualify you to teach in state/public primary or secondary schools within New Zealand.
Programme Pathways & Core Formats
The degree structure accommodates varying levels of prior experience through two key point pathways:
- 180-Point Track (1.5 Years): A hybrid delivery structure where students typically complete two foundational papers (60 points) online from their home country during Semester One, followed by two semesters (120 points) on-shore in New Zealand.
- 120-Point Track (1 Year): A fast-track option completed on-shore, consisting entirely of advanced elective coursework modules.
What You'll Study
The exact structural setup depends on the point pathway selected, pulling from advanced core modules and flexible electives:
- Core Foundational Coursework (180-Point Track Only - 60 points):
- Exploring Contemporary Pedagogies (EDCURRIC 734) – 30 points
- Foundations of Curriculum Design (LANGTCHG 702) – 30 points
- Advanced Elective Content (45 points): Three elective courses selected from specialized topics focusing on conducting research in applied language studies, sociolinguistics, second language acquisition, discourse analysis, assessment frameworks, or creativity in language teaching.
- General Electives (75 points): Five additional elective courses drawn from a wide database of specialized language teaching and linguistics schedules.
Why Choose This Programme?
- Globally Recognised Framework: Gain international accreditation and up-to-date theoretical insights from New Zealand's top-ranked university for education and language lines.
- Hybrid Structural Flexibility: Start your study path from your home country via online delivery before shifting on-shore to complete your advanced training in Auckland.
- Practitioner Focused: Focuses directly on real-world classroom strategy and second-language acquisition, allowing you to implement dynamic lesson frameworks immediately.
