Programme Overview

The Bachelor of Early Childhood Studies (BECSt) encompasses a broad, interdisciplinary study of early childhood education and social contexts. This degree is explicitly designed for individuals who want to develop a specialist understanding of the vital early years of children's lives (from birth to eight years old) but do not necessarily wish to become registered classroom teachers immediately.

Delivered via a mix of face-to-face, online, and practice-based teaching, the curriculum heavily integrates Māori and Pacific concepts, values, and knowledges. Students learn to critically analyze and respond to social justice issues, diversity, and child development trends alongside internationally recognized education scholars.

What You'll Study

To complete the degree, students must pass courses totaling 360 points (typically 24 courses). This includes 330 points from core early childhood subject schedules and 30 points of General Education.

  • Child & Human Development: Foundations of educational psychology and understanding milestones from birth to eight years.
  • Social Contexts: Exploring te ao Māori perspectives and professional communication structures.
  • Core Studies: Required university core frameworks and initial practical center observations.

Year 2 (Stage II Intermediate):

  • Diversity & Inclusion: Learning how to design supportive educational spaces for diverse community backgrounds.
  • Pedagogical Practices: Analyzing contemporary perspectives on early childhood education and the framework of Te Whāriki.
  • Electives: Choosing approved 15-point interdisciplinary courses across the university.
